Welcome to December! The finish line is officially becoming a distinguishable flicker on the horizon.
Of course this means it’s time for all those wonderful holiday parties, with all the good foods they bring.
It’s also Christmas Market season, which, although a little hectic at times, goes a long way to putting you in the holiday spirit (while you slave away during the worst period of the year at the office). And who says markets also says yummy warm and sweet market food and drink!
I’ve tracked down a few markets happening so far in Geneva, Switzerland and neighboring France. To start with, there are the ongoing Christmas markets downtown. The two main ones are at the place de la Fusterie, from 10am to 7pm until December 24th, and the one on the rue du Mont-Blanc, also going until December 24th, every day from 10am to 7pm. But then there are the ones worth trecking out too for all sorts of palatable reasons. Here are the four I find particularly attractive:
1. Marché de Noel à Cologny– Saturday 3rd and Sunday 4th of December
The goodness: crêpes, chocolate hearts, AND, my favorite chocolatiers from Meinier who are so difficult to track down.
The location: Place du Manoir, Cologny
2. Marché de Noel des Alpes d’Annecy- December 1-30, 12pm-8pm Monday through Friday, 10am-8pm on weekends
The goodness: Being Annecy, and having seen what kind of locally made products these people can pull from the surrounding Alps during the “descente des alpages”, this promises to be a particularly magically delicious outing.
The location: Annecy Old Town, in front of the Hotel de Ville, Annecy (France)
3. Marché de Noel d’Annemasse– December 9-24, 10am-7pm
The goodness: this Market is boasting a fairy land of mini chalets, a village of creative gifts, pottery, artisanal toys, spices, foie gras and fair trade products, in addition to the market traditionals of pastries, crêpes, hot mulled wine and roasted chestnuts.
The location: Avenue de la République, Annemasse (France)
4. Basel Christmas Market- now til December 23rd, 11am-8pm
The goodness: simply put, this is Switzerland’s most famous Christmas market, known for bringing you into a total winter wonderland. With over 150 stands, you will get your fill of everything from artisinal gifts to typical Swiss-German market fare.
The location: Barfüsserplatz, Basel
Let me know if I missed anything, and…
Happy holiday tasting!
